Girls’ Day at the KlimaCampus: How do you get to be a climate researcher?

There are a number of options available for girls and young women interested in becoming climate researchers. Today 30 schoolgirls had the chance to explore those options as part of Girls’ Day at the KlimaCampus. Nine scientists told the children their own personal stories – the different educational and career stages they went through before working in the environmental sciences, and what types of questions they’re now exploring in their work. Equal opportunities: The percentage of women at the top has doubled – but structural hurdles remain

Under the leadership of Sociology Professor Anita Engels, researchers in Hamburg recently explored how equal opportunity of employment between women and men has changed in the wake of the federal Excellence Initiative. One positive finding: Nearly all Graduate Schools and Clusters of Excellence consider ensuring equal opportunities to be their own responsibility. Further findings of the project “Women in Top Research Positions – On the Relation Between Sexual Inequality and Excellence” were recently presented at their closing conference. [more]

EMS Silver Medal 2013 to Hartmut Graßl

The European Meteorological Society (EMS) has chosen Professor Hartmut Graßl, former Director at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and Professor at the Meteorological Institute of the University of Hamburg, as Laureate of the EMS Silver Medal 2013. He is honoured for his leadership in shaping climate science and his exceptional communication of climate change science to peers, political leaders and the public.

The Silver Medal ceremony, which includes a Silver Medal Lecture by the Laureate, will be held on Wednesday, 11 September 2013, during the EMS Annual Meeting and European Conference on Applications of Meteorology (ECAM) in Reading, United Kingdom.

EGU Conference: Climate Topics for the Next Decade

At the EGU (European Geophysical Union) conference in Vienna this year, future climate research is again a hot topic. On Tuesday, KlimaCampus professor Valerio Lucarini and four colleagues assessed the European Union’s “Horizons 2020” concept as part of the event’s main discussion panel. With this project, the EU is setting its goals for the next decade, and defining which areas will be a priority for future EU funding.[more]

Climate Research: Hamburg Köppen Prize 2012 to Switzerland

Junior researcher Elias Markus Zubler has successfully managed to embed the influence of aerosol particles – suspended particles in the atmosphere – on temperature, precipitation and clouds into a regional climate model. Therewith, he has developed an important basic tool to improve future climate predictions.
